“KAREN” is the one hundredth album by ex-boy wonder, current man-wonder Laurie Shaw.

Recorded in his state-of-the-art, mountain-based bedroom studio, Alright late last year, “KAREN” is the sound of a future projected from a mid seventies Crayola composition. It features the single EDISON’S MEN.

Where previous opus “Bat Sanctuary” injected French pop strings into the black and silver world of 2011 Kenmare, County Kerry, “KAREN” heads for the miniature city of Kandor with its neon dots and its glossy cherry red jet packs. Or does it head to Batman’s Bat Cave of 1966 where everything has a label and flashing globes pulsate? Where transclucent buttons and stripes climb advanced data processors and spires for emergency radio contact with NASA.

Aaaaand…CUT!

So WHAT that it’s all smoke and mirrors?! It’s all made from Hollywood MDF. Look! You can see the sets wobble when the bass frequency exceeds Decebel X. Let’s take a walk out into the blazing sunshine of Downtown and see who we bump into. Come on, Mr. West. Sure, bring some beers. Over there is Edison and over there is Welles. And there’s that 50’s knife gang with matching leather jackets that have Z BIRDS stitched in white across the backs.

KAREN is a world of novelty, a sweet shop of command centre dials and diagrams conceived by mid century graphic designers. A multi-textured curved settee that hugs the fibreglass wall in the revolving malt shop in the sky.
